I was lucky to be introduced to sports as a kid. It started in the dance studio, learning the value of discipline, being in tune with my body, and having fun while being fit! I also trained in Tae Kwon Do. There was a time when I literally went from ballet class to sparring. And to top it off, my big brother introduced me to resistance training, doing squats and bench presses in the basement to the tunes of AC/DC.
It was easy for me to be fit as a kid. But as I got older, I quickly learned that if I didn’t schedule it, it didn’t happen (sound familiar?). I’ve always needed an external reason to stick with it. While at university I scheduled time at the gym like it was another class in my calendar. Before I had kids, I was a YMCA fitness instructor, because I knew I wouldn’t let others down (I had to go…I was leading the class!).
But then my schedule became my work and kid's schedule. Sure I tried a variety of things to stay in shape. I joined gyms, tried running and cycling, did workouts in my basement (yep, ACDC is still on the playlist), hiking, and most recently, tennis. But the consistency wasn’t there. And soon I realized that my body wasn't able to keep up with what I wanted to do in life.
Then I turned 50. Wow, how did that happen? Blessed in many ways, but not feeling great about how I looked and felt (something always seemed to be hurting). And clothes were no longer fitting. I either had to go up a size or....focus on building those healthy habits that I knew were necessary.
I joined the gym and signed up with a personal trainer. I built gym time into my schedule. I tracked my food and made simple modifications to reduce sugar and fat and increase protein.
Here's what I learned:
I feel great. I have less pain. I love how my clothes fit. I am not giving this up.
I would love to help you. We want it to stick long-term and it actually becomes your lifestyle.
I want you to feel that you're Fit for Living Your Best Life.
